Learn to Play Camogie

The Fastest Game on Grass

Camogie (pronounced “ka-MO-gee” with a hard G) is the female version of Hurling (it’s not what you think), an ancient Irish sport that combines skills from lacrosse, field hockey, and baseball. The modern game is a unique combination of speed, skill, and athleticism that speaks to the athlete in everyone, and amazes people who are not even seasoned sports fans.

Camogie in the Bay Area

The St Joseph’s club has been been part of the Bay Area’s thriving hurling scene since the 1990s, and now for the first time we are starting a Camogie team. We would love to have more women involved in our organization so that we can share the joys of this great sport.

Hurling

The rules of Camogie are similar to the rules of hurling but with some technical differences such as ball size, stick size, and the absence of shoulder-to-shoulder checking.

3000 Years of Sporting Heritage

Hurling predates recorded history, appearing in the myths and legends of Irish folklore that are older than the pyramids of Egypt.

It is among oldest continuously played sports in the world, is thought to be ancestral to Ice Hockey, and has been played in North America by Irish immigrants since the nineteenth century.

Get Involved

We will be happy to give you an introductory class that teaches the foundational skills of Camogie in under an hour. We start with the fundamentals of how to hold the stick, gradually build up your motor skills, and before you know it you’ll be playing in a game-like situation. We will show you how to protect yourself on the field and how to enjoy the sport safely.

Beginner lessons are available at our Tuesday night training session that happens every week during our season.
